BALTIMORE -- Johan Santanas comeback bid with the Baltimore Orioles ended Friday when the two-time Cy Young Award winner tore his Achilles tendon. The injury occurred in Florida while Santana was pitching in extended spring training. He was struck by a line drive before stumbling in pursuit of the ball. An MRI revealed a torn tendon. "The tendon is severed, and it will in effect end his season," Orioles vice-president of baseball operations Dan Duquette said. "I know the rehab is significant for these tendon injuries. Well have to get with him and speak to him. But he wont be able to pitch for the Orioles this season." The 35-year-old Santana has not pitched in the majors since 2012 with the New York Mets. The left-hander missed last season after undergoing his second major shoulder surgery, then signed a minor league contract with Baltimore in March. Santanas return appeared on course when the Orioles purchased his contract from Triple-A Norfolk on Monday and placed him on the major league disabled list. "He was pitching well," Duquette said. "The last time out he had his velocity and he was able to back-door his slider. I think he had eight strikeouts and no walks, so he was right on schedule. After (Friday), he was going to come up and join the major league team, and we were going to continue the rehab in (Double-A) Bowie." Now, however, Santanas future is up in the air. "The skills are there," Duquette said. "Hes been able to rehab his arm, but now hes got another challenge." Santana broke into the majors with Minnesota in 2000. He won both his Cy Young Awards with the Twins, going 20-6 in 2004 and 19-6 in 2006. He was traded to New York before the 2008 season and signed a $137.5 million, six-year contract. But injuries limited him to less than four full seasons on the mound with the Mets, and his record got progressively worse -- 16-7, 13-9, 11-9, 6-9. It was uncertain if Santana could return after his second shoulder surgery, but Duquette thought it was worth taking a chance. Now he and the Orioles are left looking for a Plan B. "Its unfortunate," Duquette said. "We were looking for Johans leadership and also his pedigree from being a winning pitcher. Now well have to look for that capability somewhere else. "I was looking at it like a midseason acquisition or trade. We invested in the rehab and we invested in the salary, and of course we wouldnt have had to trade a player. Unfortunately it didnt work. Sometimes you can plan and do things right, and they just dont work out." Nolan Ryan Mets Jersey . - Vince Carter, heading into his 17th NBA season, doesnt consider age a big issue anymore. LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Former professional wrestler CM Punk is headed to the UFC. The UFC announced Saturday that Punk, who gained fame in the WWE, will be joining the mixed martial arts promotion company in 2015. My professional wrestling days are over, its awesome to be here. This is something Ive wanted to do for a long time, Punk said in a UFC release. This is my new career, 100-percent. Im going to go full steam ahead, all systems go after today, and its going to be fun, he added. I have nothing but respect for everybody here at the UFC, everybody who steps in the Octagon to fight. And when its all said and done, when Im finished, everybodys going to have to respect me because I have come here to fight. The former WWE World Champion rose to fame in 2011 when he delivered a stirring speech — which he called a pipebomb — where he openly criticized the WWE and its owners, particularly Vince McMahon. Although that monologue was part of a storyline, his real-life dissatisfaction with the WWE led to him walking out on his contract in January and his retirement from pro wrestling. The real-life feud between Punk and the WWE boiled over again last week when he revealed in a lengthy podcast interview that the company had sent him his severance papers on his wedding day. He also alleged that the WWE neglected to properly treat a staph infection on his back and other lingering injuries including a concussion. I felt like it was now or never, said the 36-year-old Punk. Crippled by a series of injuries to key players and struggling at home this season, Dortmund was far from convincing in a 2-1 defeat to Zenit on Wednesday. However, the 4-2 victory in the first leg in St. Petersburg was enough for Juergen Klopps side to win 5-4 on aggregate and seal its place in Fridays draw. Hulk scored in the 16th for Zenit and captain Sebastian Kehl equalized for Dortmund in the 38th. Substitute Jose Rondon scored with a diving header in the 73rd to seal Zenits win on the night, though it was an empty victory. Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller turned away a late shot by Igor Smolnikov to prevent an even bigger defeat. In the nights other match, Manchester United advanced with a 3-0 win over Olympiakos, courtesy of a hat trick by Robin van Persie and a 3-2 victory on aggregate. "We surely didnt play a great game but we are in the quarterfinals," Kehl said. "That goal by Kehl allowed us to calm down," said Klopp, who acknowledged the quality of the Russian side. "They can really play and they gave us some problems." Dortmund will be without striker Robert Lewandowski for the first leg of the quarterfinals after he picked up his third yellow card of the competition for handling the ball. "I thought I had been pushed from behind and thats why handled the ball," Lewandowski said. &quuot; The main thing is that we went through.dddddddddddd." "The yellow card was laughable," Klopp said. With its comfortable lead from the first leg, Dortmund allowed Zenit to get into the match quickly, through a spectacular solo effort by Hulk. The Brazil striker shook off Kehl and cut inside past two defenders to blast a left-foot shot that swerved away from goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller on its way into the net. Zenit threatened a couple more times before Kehl got the equalizer. Marcel Schmelzer broke down the left flank and swung in a high cross. Kehl raced into the area and rose above the defence to send in a header that keeper Vyacheslav Malafeev got both hands to -- but could only push into the net. It was the captains first Champions League goal in 30 matches. "They have some good players up front but we didnt allow them too many chances," Kehl said. Early in the second half, Hulk unleashed a fierce free kick from about 30 metres (yards) that sailed high. Rondon scored Zenits second following a cross by Domenico Criscito from just outside the penalty area on the left -- evading defender Mats Hummels to head home from close range. Zenit, coached by Sergei Semak on an interim basis until Andre Villas-Boas takes over when the team returns home, kept up the pressure and Igor Smolnikov sent a low shot that Weidenfeller barely managed to turn away in the 88th. The last time Dortmund made it to the last eight in two straight seasons was 16 years ago. It won the title in 1997 and then reached the semifinals. ' ' '

TORONTO -- AC Milans legends team looked better than a squad of former players should Wednesday night. The Italian side scored twice in a four-minute span in the second half to defeat former stars from S.L. Benfica 2-0 to win the Legends Cup at BMO Field. Christian Lantignotti finished off a cross from Ibrahim Ba in the 65th minute to get AC Milan on the board. Then in the 68th minute Milan forward Gauz was taken down in the area. Defender Massimo Oddo easily beat Benfica keeper Nuno Santos on the ensuing penalty kick to give his team a 2-0 lead. "I think AC Milan they play quite a few times a year, I heard 16 times together in a year. This was the first time we played together and I think we did very well," said Benfica coach Antonio Jerontomo. "If we start to play together more often, which we want to do, we will improve as well." Wednesdays match was played as a tribute to the late Mozambique native, Portuguese footballer Eusebio, who passed away Jan. 5 at the age of 71. Despite dominating the first-half possession and out-chancing Benfica the two sides remained scoreless at half. "I think it was a good performance by two good teams," said Jerontomo. "I think we started off well. Maybe AC Milan had a little bit more chances. Probably they have a little more options on the bench as we had a couple of injuries. "The players felt a little bit tired, but I think the spectators enjoyed seeing the ex-champions. They still can play, but not as quick as before. It was a decent game. It was a good crowd, very good crowd." Ba had many quality chances for AC Milan. He nearly opened the scoring in the 14th minute, but collided with Santos and put his shot just wide of the goal. Two minutes later, Santos got just enough of Bas free kick from just outside the area to deflect the shot wide of the goal. In the 20th minute, AC Milan forward Christian Vieri had an excellent strike from the area, but put it just wide. "Weve been in Iran, were going to be in China so weve been all around the world. Weve had a lot of friendly matches and maybe well be back in Toronto," said Milans Palo Maldini. "The crowd was great. Were trying to put on a good show. People were excited to see the old Milan team." Benfica didnt generate much by way of scoring chances in the opening 40 minutes, but in the 32nd minute forward Nandinho had a great opportunity from just outside the box. However, he put the shot over the crossbar. As for Italys chances at the upcoming World Cup next month in Brazil, Maldini didnt seem optimistic. "Italy always battles for the final," he said. "This year is not going to be very easy. The quality is not so good, but we will have a chance to reach semifinal." AC Milan is a seven-time winner of Champions League while Benfica won last years Primeira Liga. DeAndre Hopkins Womens Jersey . The Clippers won for the sixth time in eight games, converting 20 Houston turnovers into 30 points. DeAndre Jordan had 13 points and 10 rebounds for his 30th double-double. Collison and Jared Dudley, the first two players off the Clippers bench, hit consecutive 3-pointers 18 seconds apart to give them an 82-76 lead with 9:21 to play. Los Angeles never trailed after that. Houston led 48-46 at halftime after erasing a 13-point deficit. Los Angeles opened the game with a 14-2 run as the Rockets missed seven of their first eight shots -- including an attempted dunk by Howard, who went to the bench after picking up his second foul with 3:20 left in the first quarter and his team trailing 21-17. BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Buffalo Bills are scheduled to interview two more coaching candidates before taking a wait-and-see approach to determine whether to expand their search next week, a person familiar with the process told The Associated Press on Friday. The person said the Bills are meeting with San Francisco 49ers offensive co-ordinator Greg Roman on Friday, followed by Detroit Lions defensive co-ordinator Teryl Austin on Saturday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the Bills have not revealed their plans to replace Doug Marrone, who stepped down abruptly on Dec. 31.Roman and Austin increase the Bills list to 12 candidates who have been interviewed. Its group that includes former New York Jets coach Rex Ryan, two-time Super Bowl-winning coach Mike Shanahan, Bills defensive co-ordinator Jim Schwartz and Cincinnati offensive co-ordinator Hue Jackson. The Bills have no more interviews scheduled, but that could change.Without identifying who, the person said, the Bills have identified more than one candidate on teams competing in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs this weekend. Buffalos search committee, headed by new owners Terry and Kim Pegula, will then wait until the games are over to see who might become available to be interviewed next week. The Bills have already met with three assistants on teams still in the playoffs: Seattle co-ordinators Darrell Bevell (offensive) and Dan Quinn (defensive) and Denver offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase. Its unclear whether the Bills will wait beyond next week to begin narrowing their list. The Pegulas, who purchased the team from the estate of late owner Ralph Wilson in October, have taken a hands-on approach in what has become one of the franchises most extensive searches. After spending last weekend meeting candidates on the west coast, the most recent series of meetings are taking place in Florida, where the Pegulas live.General manager Doug Whaley and team president Russ Brandon are also taking part in the interviews.Wilson was not directly involved in the Bills most recent searches. The teams last search took six days and involved five candidates before Marrone was hired in January 2013.This is the Bills sixth coaching search since Wade Phillips was fired following the 2000 season. And Marrones departure was unexpected after the second-year coach exercised an opt-out clause in his contract that kicked in once the team was sold.Buffalo went 9-7 to match its best record since 2004. The Bills, however, missed the playoffs to extend the NFLs longest active post-season drought to 15 years.Roman completed his fourth season with the 49ers, who are also in flux after coach Jim Harbaugh was not retained and was hired by Michigan. The 49ers offence finished ranked among the NFLs top 10 in each of his first three seasons before dipping to 20th last year.He is also familiar to the Pegulas because of their Penn State ties. Terry Pegula attended Penn State and is a major supporter of its football and hockey programs. Roman was a candidate to take over the Nittany Lions football team in each of its last two vacancies.Austin completed his first season with Detroit, where he oversaw a defence that finished second in the NFL in yards allowed. His previous NFL stops included Baltimore, Arizona and Seattle, and broke into coaching as a Penn State graduate assistant in 1991.Austin also has tied to Whaley, as both played college at Pittsburgh, though their careers did not overlap. The Bills strength has been their defence, which produced three Pro Bowl linemen last season.Buffalos offence has remained the teams weakness, and lacks an established starting quarterback. Veteran journeyman Kyle Orton announced his intention to retire after closing last season with a 7-5 record. According to Dave Stubbs of The Montreal Gazette, preliminary talks have begun between Markov - an unrestricted free agent this summer - and general manager Marc Bergevin.BARCELONA, Spain -- Morocco striker Mounir El Hamdaoui scored a hat trick and set up another goal in his first start for Malaga on Sunday in a 5-0 thrashing of Rayo Vallecano in the Spanish league. El Hamdaoui joined Malaga at the close of the summer transfer window, and with one start he has already equaled his goal scoring tally from last season with Italian club Fiorentina. "(El Hamdaoui) had a perfect start," coach Bernd Schuster said after getting his first win with Malaga. "You cant ask for anything more. He scored, gave assists. Hes a player that is going to help us a lot with his talent and effort. Hes always moving and always wants to receive the ball in a good position. Im happy for him, because it wasnt easy." Elsewhere, Real Betis led by midfielder Salva Sevillas brace dealt Valencia its third straight loss, a 3-1 defeat in Seville, before both teams turn to the Europa League. Espanyol won 1-0 at 10-man Granada thanks to Manuel Lanzarotes 76th-minute free kick, while Getafe striker Nicolas "Miku" Ladislao netted a double in a 2-1 win over last-place Osasuna. El Hamdaoui volleyed in Vitorino Antunes out-swinging cross to open at their La Rosaleda Stadium in the 31st, and nine minutes later the former Ajax played generously squared the ball for Francisco Portillo to make it 2-0. Malagas Eliseu Pereira put the result beyond doubt three minutes after halftime with an unstoppable shot inside the far post. El Hamdaoui finished off a great team buildup in the 62nd with the ball passing through the legs of Portillo, Pedro Morales and Jesus Gamez before he pushed it home. He then used a hard left-footed strike to drive his third goal between the goalkeeper and the post to cap Malagas much-needed victory. "What we saw today was what we were lacking, a great win, with five goals," said Schuster. "We took a step forward today." Valencias sloppy passing helped Jorge Molina put Betis ahead in the ninth, and the striker threaded a through ball for a charging Sevilla to fire by goalkeeper Diego Alves in the 22nd. Diego Alves made the first of several saves to deny Molina in the 32nd, but he failed to stop Sevilla from poking the baall between his legs in the 35th for his second goal of the night.dddddddddddd Valencia defender Ricardo Costa pulled one back with a header from a free kick in the 67th, but his team never threatened after. "We are trying to improve, but we gave too much away and its difficult to win playing like that," said Valencia coach Miroslav Djukic. "We lose the ball too easily. We need to keep it simple and play more long balls if we cant make the short pass." Valencia hosts Swansea on Thursday in the Europa League while Betis welcomes Lyon. Espanyols victory at Los Carmenes Stadium kept the Barcelona-based side unbeaten through four rounds to start the season. Lanzarote gently curled the ball off the post and into the net from a free kick inside Granadas area awarded to Espanyol after the referee ruled that goalkeeper Roberto Fernandez had handled a back pass from a defender. Televised replays showed that the ball appeared to take a deflection off an Espanyol player, suggesting that the free kick should not have been given. Granadas tempers boiled over in the 82nd when substitute Odion Ighalo received back-to-back bookings, both for protesting to the referee. "It felt like an evenly-matched game and that we had to stay alert to take our chances," said Espanyol coach Javier Aguirre. "It looked like a sure 0-0 that could only be broken with an individual action, and thats where Manu Lanzarote was great." Mikus goal-scoring performance for Getafe helped ruin the debut of Osasunas new manager Javi Gracia, who replaced the fired Jose Mendilibar two weeks ago. Osasuna started brightly on the road in Madrid with Roberto Torres scoring in the 24th, but Miku headed in a corner kick that had sailed over goalkeeper Andres Fernandez to level in the 35th. After his acrobatic kick had sent the ball off the woodwork, Miku used a nifty touch to slip the ball under a defender before placing his second goal just inside the post in the 52nd, sending Getafe on its way to its first win of the season. Osasuna almost grabbed the draw when Oriol Riera hit the crossbar in the 85th, but it remained the only team yet to take a point in Spains topflight. ' ' '

Justin Verlander will try to find a way to slow down Nelson Cruz and the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, as the Detroit Tigers aim to even the best-of-five American League Division Series at a game apiece in Game 2 at Camden Yards. Cruz set the tone with a two-run homer in the first inning, and Baltimore scored eight times in the eighth to pull away for a 12-3 victory in Game 1. The major league leader with 40 homers during the regular season, Cruz added an RBI single to his early blast off Max Scherzer. J.J. Hardy delivered a solo homer later on, while Alejandro De Aza and Jonathan Schoop each finished 2- for-4 with two RBI in the win. Cruz now has 15 postseason home runs and owns a career postseason slugging percentage of .700, which is third all-time for players with at least 100 postseason plate appearances, trailing only Babe Ruth (.744) and Lou Gehrig (.731). Well see what tomorrow brings, manager Buck Showalter said. Quickly. Chris Tillman (1-0) surrendered back-to-back solo homers to Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez in the second inning, but permitted just two other hits while striking out six over five frames. Miguel Cabrera homered off Darren ODay in the top of the eighth to bring Detroit within 4-3, before the Orioles sent 12 men to the plate in their half of the inning to turn the contest into a rout. Up until that point in the game, it was a pretty good game and it just got away from us, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. Youve got to credit the Baltimore Oriole hitters as well. Scherzer (0-1) was charged with five runs on seven hits over 7 1/3 innings of work. The AL East champion Orioles may have a tougher go of it on Friday against Verlander, who has been perfect in seven ALDS starts, going 4-0 with a 1.79 ERA. Verlander, though, finished the regular season 15-12 with a 4.54 ERA, his highest since 2008. He also gave up an AL-leading 104 earned runs in 206 innings, allowed nearly 10 hits per nine innings and saw his strikeout total significantly drop for the second year in a row. Its certainly been a down season overall for him, Ausmus said. But certainly the last couple of outings have been outstanding. Verlander did finish the season strong and allowed just two runs over his final two starts. He is 9-2 lifetime versus the Os with a 3.43 ERA in 15 starts. It was the end of the year, and its nice to finish strong, Verlander said. But you come into the postseason, and its a whole new season. Baltimore, meanwhile, will counter with lefty Wei-Yin Chen, who was terrific for the Orioles this season, registering a 16-6 record with a 3.54 ERA. Chen also ended the year on a high note and pitched to a 2.05 ERA in five September starts. Chen, who won his last five decisions at home and was 8-2 with a 3.76 ERA at Camden this season, allowed one earned run over 6 1/3 innings against the New York Yankees in his only other postseason start during the 2012 ALDS. Of course (if) you have experience in playoffs, you will know how the crowds would be and how the environment would be, Chen said. But (Ill) keep doing the same thing I was in the season, so it doesnt change that much for me. These two teams have never met one another in the postseason, but the Tigers were 5-1 against the Os in the regular season. Nemanja Matic Manchester United Jersey . Ander Herrera Jersey . - Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte sees the commitment to the handoff and cant help but come away impressed.Hi Kerry, Id like your thoughts on the bizarre ending to Saturdays Pens-Rangers game in which the Rangers second shootout goal was disallowed after the two teams had already left the ice. Clearly the final call was correct and it was a tough on-ice call for Kelly Sutherland. But why was the reversal so delayed? Were the proper NHL procedures followed and have you ever seen a similar situation? Bill Andrews, Pittsburgh Bill: The Situation Room in Toronto obtains the feed from all local and network broadcasts so they can acquire every possible camera angle to review a potential goal or play. It can take a few moments to cue up and review all of the various angles until one provides definitive information. Once Dan Boyle put the puck past Marc-Andre Fleury on what appeared to be a routine deke and legitimate goal to give NY a shoot-out victory, the Rangers players were celebrating with Henrik Lunquvist before proceeding to their dressing room. Sam Rosen and Joe Micheletti were ready to sign off on the MSG broadcast with closing post-game comments. As Sam and Joe were wrapping up, Bob Errey made an outstanding call from the overhead replay on the Penguins Root Sports broadcast. That camera angle clearly demonstrated how Dan Boyle had in fact double-touched the puck and should result in a disallowed goal! Errey emphatically repeated his call to play-by-play man Paul Steigerwald and the replay horn then sounded long and loud multiple times to indicate that the goal was under review. Following a quick review, the teams were summoned from their dressing room as referee Kelly Sutherland clicked on his microphone and relayed the correct determination made by the personnel in the Situation Room to disallow the goal.dddddddddddd It is hard to comprehend the emotional rollercoaster that took place for the players in each respective dressing room. It was surely a thrill of victory and agony of defeat moment after Brandon Sutter scored on the ensuing attempt and Rick Nash was stoned by Fleury to give the Penguins a 3-2 win. The proper procedure was followed to review and disallow the goal once they looked at all the angles. Precious time would have been saved and likely prevented the players from leaving the ice if the overhead angle was looked at first. That was just bad luck more than it was anyones fault. The optics looked bad when the players had to be summoned from the dressing room but it also added some unusual suspense and drama to the ending of a great game. I have to believe this bizarre situation was the first and last time teams will be called from their dressing rooms to conclude a shootout. If it hasnt already been done, a policy directive needs to be sent to the teams that require them to remain on the ice until the referee receives the thumbs up signal confirming a good goal and an end to the game. As a player, Bob Errey attempted to help me out with many calls. After seeing the great game-changing call he made on this play perhaps I should have taken his advice. ' ' '

NAPLES, Fla. -- Even though he has beaten Bernhard Langer twice down the stretch for Champions Tour titles, Kirk Triplett isnt ready to say hes the German stars nemesis. "No," Triplett said. "Were just going to say the sample size is still very small." The 51-year-old Triplett won the ACE Group Classic on Sunday for his third Champions Tour title, holing a 6-foot par putt on the final hole for a one-stroke victory. Triplett shot a 6-under 66 to finish at 16-under 200 on TwinEagles Talon Course. He won the 50-and-over tours Pebble Beach event the last two years after winning three times on the PGA Tour. "Ive never won out here on this side of the world," Triplett said. "Im a West Coast guy through and through, so to win on this Bermuda grass is, I think, a little bit of a minor miracle for me." Langer, the defending champion, Duffy Waldorf and Olin Browne tied for second. Playing in the final threesome, Triplett, Langer and Waldorf were tied for the lead with a hole to play. In Tripletts last win at Pebble Beach, he also was paired with Langer, who has owned this event the last three years, winning in 2011 and 2013 and finishing second behind Kenny Perry in 2012. "Hes awesome to play with," Triplett said. "Im telling you, you know the guy, hes such a great competitor and hes such a nice man. We were joking last week, If you shot one shot worse than Bernhard every day all year, what would you finish on the money list? Somebody goes, Second, right? because it just feels that way sometimes." On the par-4 18th, Waldorf drove into a bunker and wound up with a bogey for a 66. "I hit a bad drive," he said. "So I mean, it was a bad drive. The pin was in a tough spot. I laid up fine, but I spun my wedge a lot and just didnt -- I didnt hit it close enough to have a chance for par." Admittedly using the wrong club, Langers second shot sailed left, and his 12-footer for par curled around the cup for bogey and a 67. Tripletts second shot from a divot landed about 25 feet from the pin. His birdie putt went past the hole and he made the 6-footer for the victory. "You want to make birdies but you dont want to make bogeys and youre thinking to yourself, 4s not going to lose this probably, " Triplett said. "I mean, it might. If it does, if it loses the 18th hole, you look the guy in the eye, shake his hand and say, Well done, sir. "It wasnt the best (putt) I made all day, but it was good enough." Langer has finished in the top 10 in 40 of the last 48 tournaments hes played in. The German star won the season-opening event in Hawaii last month for his 19th Champions Tour title. Waldorf, coming off a playoff loss to Michael Allen last week in Boca Raton in the Allianz Championship, almost holed out on the par-3 16th. Greece coach Fernando Santos announced the final 23-man squad and said he believes the 26-year-old Mitroglou will be ready for Brazil despite his lack of game time since moving to England at the start of the year to join now-relegated Premier League side Fulham. "I wasnt 100 per cent about some of the call-ups until a few weeks ago. Mitroglou was one of those cases," Santos said. "We watched the last 30 minutes of his game, and we paid a lot of attention -- and we judged him to be ready ... were looking at playing ability and physical condition: People who are safe choices." Mitroglou joined teammates later Monday at the national teams opening training session at seaside facility near Athens. At the World Cup, Greece will face Colombia, Japan and Ivory Coast in Group C. Despite Greeces fast opponents, the Portuguese coach opted for more experienced players, including 2004 European Championship winners Costas Katsouranis and captain Giorgos Karagounis. Three strikers were dropped from preliminary lineup: Dimitris Papadopoulos of Atromitos, Stefanos Athanasiadis of PAOK and Nikolaos Karelis of Panathinaikos. Defenders Kyyriakos Papadopoulos and Dimitris Siovas also failed to make the squad due to persistent injury troubles.dddddddddddd "I was sorry not to include players that helped us in qualification, like (midfielder) Sotiris Ninis and Siovas," Santos said. With the 2014 CFL Draft set to take place next Tuesday in Toronto, CFL on TSN analyst Duane Forde breaks down the top prospects. Today, he looks at the offensive line. 1. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (OT, McGill) You Should Know: Over the course of his university career, Duvernay-Tardifs commitments to medical school and the family business frequently limited him to one practice per week, yet he was still the Metras Trophy winner as the Top Lineman in CIS football in 2013. The Good: His combination of size, athleticism, strength, intelligence, and untapped potential make him the most intriguing offensive line prospect produced by the CIS since Mike Schad in 1986. The Bad: Hes projected as a 4th round pick in the NFL Draft so whoever picks him wont have him for at least another year - if ever - especially considering his desire to finish med school. 2. David Foucault (OT, Montreal) The Good: At 67 and a relatively lean 320 lbs., he moves well, making him a potential ratio-breaking offensive tackle. The Bad: Despite all of his obvious tools, Foucault has yet to be consistently dominant at the university level. 3. Matthias Goossen (OC/OG, Simon Fraser) The Good: Combining toughness and intelligence, this three-time All-GNAC selection has played every position on the O-Line during his four years as a starter. The Bad: Despite having always played in Canada, he has never faced defenders who are a yard off the ball, as SFU and British Columbia high schools both play under American rules. 4. Pierre Lavertu (OC, Laval) The Good: Quick, strong and smart, he was a three-time All-Canadian and four-time All-RSEQ selection while anchoring the nations best collegiate O-Line. The Bad: His ceiling likely isnt as high as those ranked ahead of him. That said; hes as CFL ready as any prospect in the Class of 2014. 5. Tchissakid Player (OG, Northwestern State) The Good: Although he played at a smaller school, this 66, 300 lbs. guard is the only NCAA Division 1 player in the entire draft class. The Winnipeg-born, Texas-raised lineman was a three-year starter for the Demons. The Bad: A hamstring injury suffered at the Toronto Regional Combine prevented him from participating in the main CFL Combine, which kept scouts from comparing him head to head with other top prospects. Other Contenders: - Jas Dhillon (OG, British Columbia) - 2013 Canada West All-Star; former DL, 2013 was his only year on offence- Terry Hart (OG, St. Francis Xavier) - 2013 AUS All-Star; 32 bench press reps tied Lavertu atop O-Line group at CFL Combine- Kyle Paterson (OG, Regina) - from same hometown (Weyburn, SK) and college as CFLers Brendon LaBatte and Brett Jones; 5.22 second 40-yard dash and 30 bench press reps at CFL Combine- Quinn Everett (OG, Mount Allison) - college defensive lineman shows potential as a guard; dominated the O-Line testing at the Montreal Regional Combine - Aaron Wheaton (OG, Toronto) - 65", 295 lbs.; participated in 2013 East West Bowl Also On The Radar (alphabetically): Ahmed Abusafeyeh (Tiffin/Windsor AKO Fratmen), Kwinton Albino (Manitoba), Stephen Armstrong (Mount Allison), Lane Bryksa (Saskatchewan), Renaud Lafrance-Longtin (Sherbrooke), Fréderik Landry-Simard (Concordia) Analysis: During the 2013 season, the CFL made two significant changes to the leagues draft eligibility rules. Under the old system, all players became draft eligible four years after joining a college program. Now, prospects at U.S. schools become draft eligible upon completion of their college eligibility, eliminating redshirt juniors ("futures") from the draft. Those at Canadian schools now become draft eligible three years after using their first year of CIS eligibility. In other words, if a player redshirts in his first university season, his draft year gets postponed by a year (i.e. hed now be draft eligible after his fifth year instead of his fourth). In this "transition year", no position group was impacted more by the rule changes than the offensive line. No fewer than five NCAA Division 1 O-Linemen, including outstanding UNLV tackle Brett Boyko, and a handful of top CIS hogs, like Calgarys All-Canadian guard Sukh Chung, were reclassified from 2014 to the 2015 draft class. In addition, a CFL policy requiring "non-resident" Canadians to apply for their non-import status (even when they clearly qualify) led to Penn States Winnipeg-born star guard John Urschel also being excluded from this draft class. As a result, what wouldve been a bumper crop of high end offensive line prospects was reduced to just four (Duvernay-Tardif, Foucault, Goossen, and Lavertu), followed by a lot of uncertainty about the next tier of prospects. Bear in mind that while the eligibility rules have changed, the CFLs need for non-import offensive linemen hasnt, and the effect on this years draft process will be twofold. First, with Duvernay-Tardif most certainly NFL-bound, the demand for the other top linemen will be intense. For teams whose need is more immediate, theyll look to Lavertu and Goossen, as their learning curves wont be as steep as Foucaults. Regardless of the order, those three could easily be the first three players off the board and will surely all be Top Five selections. Secondly, with the leagues constant need for non-import O-Linemen, teams looking for OL depth will be forced to reach for lower ranked prospects (i.e. draft them earlier than their ability suggests they should be picked). As for Duvernay-Tardif, the gap between the top four or five O-Line prospects and the rest of the class means that his NFL interest shouldnt cause him to fall as far as he would have in a deeper draft pool. As a precedent, Ill point to the 2005 CFL Draft. Much like the Class of 2014, there werent a lot of "cant miss" offensive line prospects. A few days before that draft, the clear No. 1 prospect, Toledo tackle Nick Kaczur, had been selected in the 3rd round of the NFL Draft. Despite the limited supply of upper echelon O-Linemen, the demand for non-import blockers remained the same, as eight of the first nineteen selections were offensive linemen, including Kaczur, who went 9th overall. Simply put, the Toronto Argonauts, who chose him, felt that the likelihood of Kaczur returning to Canada within a few years was greater than the likelihood of the linemen who were still available developing into quality starters within the same time frame. In the same draft a similar line of thinking led to the second-ranked O-Lineman, Chris Best, going 4th overall despite having already committed to a Masters degree program that would keep him from turning pro until two years later. Godfrey Ellis was chosen 10th overall even after measuring in at 510 at the Combine. The fact that Jeff Keeping, a college tight end, had never played O-Line didnt stop him from being drafted - as a guard - 18th overall. John Comiskey went one spot later even though he hadnt played a single snap in the previous season. Fast forward to 2014, where the point is this. The top offensive linemen will be snapped up early. Once Lavertu, Goossen, Foucault, and Player are gone, teams will have to evaluate the likelihood and timeline of Duvernay-Tardif becoming a CFL lineman vs. the likelihood and timeline of the same happening for the remaining O-Linemen on the board. The "tipping point" could be reached by the end of Round 1 and probably no later than Round 3. We often speak of moments when it comes to football. The 90-plus minutes of play are about trends and approach. A lot happens in that span, altering the course of a game. There is an epidemic emerging among onlookers focusing on useless stats, some with meaning but few telling the true story. Its the moments that define a match and decide its fate. Two particular moments Sunday not only defined their respective matches, but also the tournament as a whole. No minute played will ever encapsulate the positive nature of this tournament better than in time added between Switzerland and Ecuador in Brasilia. With the match level at 1-1, the South American side saw weakness in an underperforming Swiss team and nobly was pushing for a winner. Antonio Valencia found space down the right side and played a good ball to Michael Arroyo inside the top of the box. Arroyos touch was heavy and the Ecuadorian hesitated. That moment of indecision gave Swiss central midfielder Valon Behrami time to get stuck in, coming to the rescue with a picture perfect game saving tackle. Behrami, who struggled throughout the match, didnt stop there. He started the counter-attack from inside his own box with purpose, sprinting with the ball down the middle of the field. Behrami was met by a crunching challenge, a clear foul by any standard. Behrami went down but wasnt out. Many players in that situation would have stayed down, waited for the whistle and killed off the match and settle for the point, but not Behrami. The midfielder immediately jumped to his feet and carried on his run. Huge credit goes to the referee, Ravshan Irmatov of Uzbekistan, who refereed a very good match. No moment was better than allowing play to continue after the foul. Advantage earned, advantage given. So many officials in the game are over-anxious, especially when a player goes down, to blow their whistle and halt proceedings. Irmatov read the play, was patient and the game carried on. It was truly expert officiating. Switzerland carried on their move. Within seconds, the ball was played wide right by Behrami. The ball kept moving, with the switch of play on. Ricardo Rodriguez had been flying down the left flank all day long. He was open and he got the ball. Rodriguez took a touch, brought his head up and played a perfect ball to the near post. Substitute Haris Seferovic obliged, making the near-post run, getting on the end of the weighted pass to knock in the winner with seconds to play. It was spectacular football in all phases of the build-up and worthy of the game winning goal on any occasion, let alone in World Cup play. It was excellence personified, from the tackle to the fair play, from the officiating to the counter-attack and the finish. The end result may be harsh on Ecuador. They deserved something from a match well played. A goal in such a manner can only sting so much. It was a defining moment for all thats good and right in the game of football. The second defining moment came between France and Honduras in a rugged, physical match where Honduras was content to kick and hack. The ‘H on their jerseys must stand for hatchet job. It was largely disgraceful. Nevermind the overall quality of the match, it was the moment goal-line technology made its true arrival at the World Cup and signals progressive change, benefiting the game to the highest degree. In the 48th minute and France up 1-0, Karim Benzema broke in and put the ball off the post, rebounding off goalkeeper Noel Valladares before it appeared to cross the goal-line. Benzema celebrated, but was it a goal? In a matter of seconds, referee Emerson De Carvalho pointed to half and the goal was ruled ‘good. De Carvalho was notified immediately of the good goal call and pointed to half. The viewer may have been confused, but there was no indecision by the officiating crew. It took a minute and ten seconds for the video replay to show on the screen. Initial panic on Twitter was complete nonsense, as the first goal-line review showed ‘no goal. Those who were patient enough came to realize the first adjudication had nothing to do with the ball of the post, and that two goal decisions using the technology were needed. The second review came after the ball went off the back of Valladares. By the slimmest of margins, the video showed the ball had crossed the line. The margin for error with the technology is said to be plus- or minus-1.5cm. The ball couldnt have crossed the line by much more than that. But we have to trust the technology. There is no point using it if we dont. Honduras Head Coach Luis Fernandez Suarez unsurprisingly protested. French Head Coach Didier Deschamps tried to explain, but how do you plead for common sense to someone acting irrational? Arguing against goal-line technology is like arguing against gravity: It is nonsensical. The call was right. There is no point arguing. After the protests ceased, the match carried on. It took two minutes, thirty seconds total to go through the process, celebrate and calm emotions. Two minutes, thirty seconds to make sure the call was right. This was no Frank Lampard foot-over-the-line in Bloemfontein we are talking about here. It was mere centimeters. The debate is done. Good goal and we move on. This stands as a watershed moment for FIFA and world soccer. For goal-line technology to work so effectively on the world stage is a testament to progression in the game. It is an overwhelming success and must be instituted in all major leagues, worldwide. It begs the question what else this technology can be used for and how far the game is willing to go with technology. Offside calls? Perhaps thats the next step in the evolution of the game, to get the call right. These were two very different moments, but two tremendously important ones. The World Cup continues to live up to all the hype. There have been 37 goals in 11 matches, the most through this many games since 1958. Three goals or more have been scored in 10 out of the 11 matches played and in the game there were not three goals, two were disallowed that should have stood. The tournament has been spectacular. With moments like these, we can truly call it the beautiful game. Sit back and enjoy. Contact Gareth Wheeler: gareth.wheeler@bellmedia.ca Twitter: @WheelerTSN Air Max 2019 Scontate . Maria Sharapova will face an anti-doping panel in London on Wednesday knowing she will not benefit from recent confusion surrounding the drug she tested positive for in January. The 29-year-old Russian stunned the tennis world in March when she announced she had failed a test for meldonium on January 26, the day she lost an Australian Open quarter-final to Serena Williams. The Latvian-made heart disease medication had only been added to the World Anti-Doping Agencys banned list on January 1 but had been on a watch list for over a year and all national anti-doping agencies were told in October that it would be banned. With use of meldonium widespread across Eastern Europe, Sharapovas case was the most high-profile in an avalanche of positives in the first four months of the year. As of early May, WADA said there had been 288 positive samples. Sharapova must face an anti-doping panel in London But in April, the agency was forced to make an embarrassingly climbdown when it admitted there was a lack of scientific certainty on how long it takes for the drug to be completely excreted.Early suggestions that it should be out of an athletes system within days gave way to fears it could be present in long-term users, in trace amounts, for weeks, if not months. This led WADA to issue new guidance, directing that samples collected before March 1 below a certain concentration of meldonium could be discarded, as the athlete might be able to prove they had stopped taking it in 2015.Last month, Belarusian doubles specialist Sergey Betov, who also tested positive at the Australian Open, was cleared by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) on these grounds. Maria reveals failed drug test Maria Sharapova has announced she failed a drugs test during the Australian Open in January. This prompted speculation that five-time grand slam winner Sharapova could escape without punishment but both she and her lawyer John Haggerty had already admitted she had been taking it, on her doctors advice, throughout January. This was underlined by Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko last month, when he told the Russian news agency TASS that the concentration of meldonium in Sharapovas system was above the provisional limit.Sharapova, instead, must try to convince an ITF panel that the laundry list of health reasons that Haggerty referred to in March should qualify her for a backdated therapeutic use exemption (TUE). Sharapova poses with her trophy after winning Wimbledon in 2004 Whether this will be enough to see the worlds highest-earning female athlete avoid any ban at all is highly debatable, as all athletes sign up to the principle of strict liability and TUEs should be arranged, and independently verified, in advance. The maximum punishment available is four years but most anti-doping experts think a more likely ban is between six to 12 months, which would start from the date of her provisional suspension on March 12.That would mean even a ban at the lenient end of that range would see Sharapova miss the remaining grand slams this season, including Wimbledon, as well as the Rio Olympics. Numbers Game looks into the Islanders getting Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin. The Islanders Get: C Mikhail Grabovski and LW Nikolai Kulemin. Grabovski, 30, has been a productive centre, scoring 160 points in 261 games over the past four seasons, which ranks 98th among NHL forwards. While that alone is a decent indication of Grabovskis ability to contribute as a second-line centre, hes put up terrific relative possession numbers in four of the last five seasons, the only exception being in 2012-2013 with the Toronto Maple Leafs, when he was effectively buried in a defensive role. That led to his being bought out by the Maple Leafs in one of the more ridiculous decisions in the history of NHL contract buyouts. One year after he was bought out by the Maple Leafs and could only drum up enough interest to secure a one-year, $3-million deal as a free agent, Grabovski signed for four years and $20-million with the Isles. Going to the Islanders should offer Grabovski an opportunity to get favourable matchups, with zone starts tilted towards the offensive zone and softer opposition while opponents send their best at John Tavares line and the Islanders put Frans Nielsens line out for the toughest defensive assignments. Grabovski has scored 20 or more goals three times and topped 50 points twice. His career points per game of 0.59 works out to 48 points over an 82-game schedule, so maybe something around a 50-point season is the best-case scenario, but if Grabovski can put up between 40 and 50 points with typically strong possession stats over the course of his contract, he will be a solid addition for the Islanders. Grabovskis departure from Washington leaves a hole at second-line centre, one that still needs to be filled, unless Marcus Johansson or Evgeny Kuznetsov fit into that spot. Kulemin is a 27-year-old winger who scored 30 goals and 57 points riding shotgun with Grabovski for the Maple Leafs in 2010-2011, but has failed to generate much offence siince, scoring 23 goals and 71 points in 188 games.dddddddddddd But, to be fair, Kulemin has been stuck in a defensive role for the past couple seasons, with primarily defensive zone starts against quality opposition. While Kulemin hasnt scored a bunch in the NHL, particularly recently, hes produced enough to believe that there is more offence to be uncovered. He has 11 points in 20 games for Russia at the past two World Championships and 38 points in 36 KHL games while playing alongside Evgeni Malkin, so its not like Kulemin cant find his way around the offensive zone, but he likely needs a centre that will be the creator offensively. With the expectation that Kulemin will skate with Grabovski, he too should benefit from more offensive zone starts and favourable matchups. Maybe that results in Kulemin scoring 35-to-40 points (that 57-point season in 2010-2011 sure appears to be an aberration) and if that comes with solid two-way play then, even at his lofty price, Kulemin can be a worthy acquisition for the Isles. Toronto didnt seem to be in position to pay Kulemin, and they shouldnt have, based on how he was being used. Wingers that are deployed like Kulemin dont tend to get paid. Kulemins contract also runs for four years, paying him $16.75-million, which is a lot given his recent production, but if he gets more of an offensive opportunity, Kulemin has a decent shot at producing enough offensively to justify that price, which is fair for a second-line winger. All in all, this is an aggressive move by the Islanders and suddenly gives them terrific depth up front. So much that they likely need to find room on the wing for young guns like Brock Nelson and Ryan Strome, but its an enviable problem to have so much talent that some of your centres need to find room to play on the wing. Their defence can still get better, but these signings put the Islanders into the mix among playoff contenders for next season. RENTON, Wash. - Somewhere along the way, "pedestrian" became a favoured word for the Seattle Seahawks receivers. Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse and Golden Tate each used the word in some fashion after the Seahawks beat San Francisco to win the NFC championship Sunday. It was their way of responding to critics who have panned Seattles receiving corps as one of the weak points in the Seahawks roster. "It irritates the hell out of me when weve got guys who constantly want to talk about our receiving corps," Baldwin said after the 23-17 win over the 49ers. "Talking about were average. Were pedestrian. Were going to walk our ... to the Super Bowl. Pedestrians." Seattles receiving crew was supposed to have more experience and be considered a strength before the season began. Thats when the Seahawks were expected to have Percy Harvin and Sidney Rice as their starters, with Baldwin, Tate and Kearse filling secondary roles as extra receivers catching passes from Russell Wilson. But then Harvin missed 15 of 16 regular-season games following hip surgery in August and Rice was lost for the year after Week 8 with a knee injury. Its left an unheralded, underappreciated group as Seattles pass catching options. And while they despise being cast as a weak link, they also are more than happy to use those slights as motivation. Perhaps no player feeds off the negativity more than Baldwin. Before the NFC title game, the undrafted free agent out of Stanford talked about carrying a "boulder" around on his shoulder, not a chip. Then he made sure to note that pundits on Sunday morning were again pointing to Seattles receivers as the reason Wilson and the pass game had been struggling. "They were talking about Russell Wilson was struggling and the reason he was struggling was his receiving corps was appetizers," Baldwin said. "Ill take that. Ill be an appetizer. But thats a good ... appetizer if you ask me." Baldwin responded with one of the best games in his career on Sunday. He finished with six catches for 106 yards — the second-most in his three seasons — including a 51-yard reception in the first half that helped loosen the 49ers defence. But he wasnt alone. Tate had four receptions and Kearse made one of the biggest catches in his young career. On fourth-and-7 early in the fourth quarter, Wilsons hard count got the 49ers to jump into the neutral zone. Knowing it was a free play, Seattles receivers broke off the original routes and headed vertical to the end zone. Kearse was able to get a step on Carlos Rogers and pulled in a 35-yard TD pass from Wilson with 13:44 left that gave Seattle a 20-17 lead that the Seahawks did not relinquish. "When you run a route you got to always expect that the ball could come to you. But when the ball is in the air its all instinct, its all play-making ability," Kearse said. "Russ threw a good ball at me, it just shows the trust he has in us and you know well just try to make the best of every opportunity." Then later, prodded by Baldwin, Kearse followed the line in the wide receivers room. "Im just a pedestrian trying to walk my way to the Super Bowl," he said. What makes Seattles group of receivers unique is the lack of credentials. Take Harvin out of the equation, and of Seattles top five receivers, four were undrafted: Baldwin, Kearse, Ricardo Lockette and Bryan Walters. Tate was the only draftee, taken in the second round in 2010. Its another example of general manager John Schneiders ability to unearth hidden talents, but the group also comes with a built-in motivation to prove wrong anyone who overlooked or undervalued their potential. They also play in an offence where numbers will never be extraordinary. Only four times in 18 regular and post-season games this season did Seattle attempt 30 or more passes. Three times they didnt even attempt 20 throws. That leaves limited opportunities when the offence calls for the tight end and running backs to be involved in the pass game as well. And all that is without Harvin, who is expected to have recovered from a concussion in time for the Super Bowl. "At the end of the day, we want to be a team that makes the big play when we need to," Wilson said. "Always make the consistent ones, but make the big play when we need to, and the guys have done that all year." Evander Kane Jersey . MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota bullpen helped bail out Phil Hughes after the Twins ace had uncharacteristic outing Sunday. Joe Mauer had two hits and two RBIs, and the Twins beat the White Sox 6-5 to complete their first four-game sweep against Chicago in 20 years. Anthony Swarzak and Casey Fien combined for three shutout innings of relief and Jared Burton earned his first save since May 30, 2013, with a perfect ninth. "Everybody was great except for me today," said Phil Hughes, who lasted just five innings but got the win. He allowed eight hits and tied a season high by giving up five earned runs. Hughes (8-3), who went at least six innings in his 11 previous outings, allowed his first walk in 107 batters during the White Soxs five-run third inning. "I just struggled with command, my off-speed stuff wasnt great," Hughes said. "Our bullpen stepped up big today, offence fought back a couple times. Thats huge." Gordon Beckham and Jose Abreu had two RBIs apiece for the White Sox, who have lost eight straight games against AL Central rivals. "Anytime you sit there and pity yourself, youre going to get buried. Nobody cares. You have to be able to pick yourself up off the mat and compete and then it works out," said manager Robin Ventura. After Chicago scored five times in the third for a 5-3 lead, Brian Dozier and Mauer had RBI singles and Josh Willingham added a sacrifice fly in the fourth to put the Twins ahead for good. The Twins last swept Chicago in a four-game series June 9-12, 1994. "Anytime you sweep anybody is a real good feeling, but anytime you get a four-game it makes it that much more gratifying for our ballclub," said bench coach Terry Steinbach, who took over when manager Ron Gardenhire was ejected in the third inning after arguing with home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn. On an overcast, humid afternoon, Hughes wasnt the only starter who struggled. In his past five starts for Chicago, John Danks (6-6) was 3-1 with a 1.51 ERA, allowing just 24 hits.dddddddddddd However, none of those were against Minnesota, a team he has struggled against. Danks allowed six earned runs on a season high-tying 10 hits. In his last eight starts versus the Twins since Aug, 11, 2010, he is 0-6 with a 6.18 ERA. "Its just one of those days, I guess. Certainly wasnt fun. Shot myself in the foot. Didnt do myself any favours. Cost us the game," he said. "You score five runs, that should be plenty to win a ballgame. To go out and give it right back in a five-inning span is kind of a tough pill to swallow." The left-hander walked the first two batters he faced, but the Twins managed just one run. Minnesota, however, scored twice in the second for a 3-0 lead. Kurt Suzuki led off with a double, but was thrown out at home trying to score on a single by Eduardo Escobar. Escobar scored one batter later on Sam Fulds double off the right field wall. Mauer added an RBI single later in the inning. Mauer has six RBI in his last four games, after entering the series with just 16. "When Joe Mauer heats up, you watch out around the league," Dozier said. Hughes gave up the lead in the third. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. After Adam Eaton struck out on a full-count pitch, Beckham lined the first pitch he saw for a two-run double to the wall in left-centre and Abreu followed with a two-run single up the middle for a 4-3 lead. A bloop single by Conor Gillaspie plated the innings final run. NOTES: Suzuki had three hits. ... Willingham returned to the Minnesota lineup after being given Saturday off.
